Inside the camper, my sister and I slept on the top bed, placing us in the overhang on the roof of the Ford, the most glamorous spot in the camper during cool weather. 23 My mother dragging my sister and me in the Nova to the kosher butcher (1978). 24 But in the heat of summer, we coveted my brother’s spot. His single bed lay against “the hole,” the crawlway from the camper into the front seat of the Ford, where my parents blasted the air-conditioning until frost formed on the windows. Once when I was six, a goose chased me three blocks. To this day, I’m convinced he knew we were the ones eating all his bread. We had a holiday food once: canned cranberry sauce. It sat there, this red, can-shaped thing, wiggling almost imperceptibly if any of us moved. I had nightmares that 40 the red cylinder was chasing me.

She informed us, despite our requests for a traditional holiday meal, that none of us liked turkey, and that’s why. I actually liked turkey, or liked the idea of it, anyway. I’d only tried it once, in a sandwich slathered with deli 38 mustard, not quite the same as a Thanksgiving roast slathered in gravy. I’d begun romanticizing things I deemed exotic, like holiday meals that included an actual holiday dish. As we were called to the dinner table, I would have a flash of my fantasy: a roaring fire, the smell of melting butter on hot biscuits, a table set with shiny silverware, china, and glasses.
