That said, doing the Basic Minute and praying are complementary practices. So you can certainly say a prayer before doing the Basic Minute. You can also dedicate or offer your Minute to something greater than you: your guardian angel, your patron saint, all beings, or God. In its deepest sense, prayer is an expression of gratitude and a way to align yourself with what is greater than you. This attitude of humility, however, is not always so easy to adopt. If you do a Basic Minute before praying, this might help you to empty your mind, let go of any thoughts of personal gain, and become truly still and centered.

Now that you are sitting down, sit up. Imagine that the crown of your head is being pulled upward, away from the ground. Don’t do this forcefully; just gently encourage your spine to lengthen. This may feel like a stretch, but think of it this way: for as long as you’ve been on earth, gravity has been pulling you down, so it takes some determination to lift yourself up. Gradually, this will become second nature. You will shed the weight of the world. Think of it as cosmic traction. Now that you are sitting up, relax.

But in the Basic Minute, you want to harness all your energy into one place. So try placing one hand on each knee, or placing both hands in your lap, one on top of the other. There are many different ways to do this, but the most important thing is that your hands be balanced, symmetrical and still, just like your legs. Now close your eyes. Breathe in and out gently through your nose. If that feels odd, or you have a cold, it’s okay to breathe through your mouth. It doesn’t matter whether your inhalation is longer than your exhalation, or vice versa.
